Being a web developer and working with clients on blogs and social networks I’ve found that most people online are assholes. Don’t get me wrong there are generally nice people out there but the issue that I have are the ones that deliberately try and start something. In the internet world we call these people trolls and normally these people just go around fishing for people to mess with but where is the line.

The line between trolling and online bullying is a fine line and many trolls cross this. There have been many news storied of teenagers being bullied online and end up killing themselves. Things that start out as a troll just messing around quickly turn into bullying, someone. Let me tell you I’ve experienced online bullying when trying to run a competition on Facebook and people don’t pull punches.

The competition was a public vote on which customers should be on a container of a product for 12 months. We had several entries and it got down to an amateur model and a kid, the model’s friends went out and made a Facebook page that put down this little girl and made fun of her and her mother. This was something that wants to far, these friends were toeing the line and crossed it.

We not only see these comments online but in real life and the way to solve them or to move past it is to ignore it. Nine times out of ten, if you don’t bite the troll gets bored and leaves it alone. Other times if it does get out of control then contacting the site administrator can solve the problem. What definitely not the answer is killing yourself, things can get rough I know but this is never the answer.
